چکیده
= Abstract = This is to report clinical and radiological findings in 7 patients with selective cerebellar degeneration following ,B-fluoroethyl acetate intoxication. ,B-Fluoroethyl acetate, an ethyl ester of fluoroacetate which is a metabolic inhibitor of Krebs cycle is used as a rodenticide. Following initial stage of coma from intoxication, the patients woke up to show selective cerebellar dysfunction, often so severe as not to be able to sit or stand unsupported. They improved gradually over several months to years with variable degrees of residual cerebellar dysfunction. Gait disturbance and dysarthria were the most prominent and persistent factors of the cerebellar dysfunction, whereas mild nystagmus was rarely seen. Cognitive function was not impaired. Cerebellar atrophy became noticeable on CT and MRI 4 weeks after poisoning, and progressed over time even with clinical improvement. Cerebellar degeneration contrasts with pallidal degeneration following carbon monoxide poisoning. ,B-Fluoroethyl acetate may be selectively toxic to the cerebellum.

متن کاملSpatial Memory, Motor Coordination, Cerebellar and Hippocampal Histoarchitectural Changes following Atropine Administration to Adult Mice
Atropine is a non-selective muscarinic receptor antagonist. In overdoses, atropine is poisonous. It is sometimes added to potentially addictive drugs, particularly anti-diarrhoea opioid drugs such as diphenoxylate or difenoxin. The aim of this study was to investigate spatial memory and motor changes associated with varying doses (5 and 10 mg/kg body weight) ingestion of atropine, as well as it...
متن کاملSelective cerebellar degeneration following carbon monoxide poisoning.
Monoxide Poisoning Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds. Until recently, coal contributed a significant portion of the fuel used for heating and cooking in Korea, and most cases of CO poisoning were due to defective exhaust tubes in old coal-heating facilities. To our knowledge, selective degeneration of the cerebellar cortex a...
متن کاملRestricted diffusion in Wallerian degeneration of the middle cerebellar peduncles following pontine infarction
BACKGROUND Acute Wallerian degeneration following infarction has been show to result in areas of restricted diffusion within the brain. Very few reports describe this appearance in middle cerebellar peduncles. CASE REPORT A 37 year old woman was admitted to hospital following sudden collapse and was subsequently found to have a pontine infarct. The complex clinical course resulted in MR imagi...
